The Call: A Non-Running Mondeo in Scarborough

The call came in on a weekday afternoon. The owner had a 2010 Ford Mondeo that had been sitting in her driveway in Scarborough for a while. It hadn't been driving for weeks — maybe longer. The timing belt had failed, which on a Mondeo is a serious issue. On top of that, there were multiple other problems stacking up: a weak battery, some electrical gremlins, and a general sense that the car had given up before the owner had. She'd been trying to jump-start it with a portable battery pack, hooking it up, cranking it over, getting a brief cough of life before it died again. It wasn't working.

The Timing Belt Problem

Timing belt failure on a Ford Mondeo is a big deal. The 2.5L Duratec V6 (or the 2.0L EcoBoost depending on the variant) is an interference engine — which means if the timing belt snaps while the engine is running, the pistons hit the valves and the engine is effectively done. It's not a minor repair; it's a rebuild or a replacement engine, and neither option is cheap.

On this Mondeo, the belt hadn't snapped completely. What had happened was that the belt had stretched enough to jump teeth, throwing the engine's timing out. The result was an engine that would crank but not fire properly, and when it did catch it ran rough, misfired, and died. Combined with a weak battery that couldn't sustain the cranking effort, the car wasn't going anywhere under its own power. The owner had been quoted thousands by a mechanic to fix it, and by the time he called us he'd already decided it wasn't worth spending that kind of money on a 16-year-old Mondeo.

What We Paid and Why

We paid $500 cash. The car was complete — engine, gearbox, panels, interior all present — which is why it wasn't a $200 scrap quote. A complete non-runner with all its parts intact is worth more than a stripped shell because there are more salvageable components to resell. But the engine was potentially damaged from the timing belt issue, and the Mondeo isn't the highest-demand donor in Perth. We see strong demand for Hiluxes, Commodores, Rangers, and Camrys. The Mondeo is more of a niche car — parts sell, but not as fast, which limits what we can pay.

$500 was fair for a complete non-runner with uncertain engine health in a less popular model. We pay more for 4WDs and popular models, less for rare sedans with engine issues.
