How Much Do Wreckers Pay for Cars in Perth? (2026 Prices by Make)
Short answer: across our last 47 cash-for-car pickups (June-August 2026), we paid between $200 and $1,200, with a typical payout of about $600. Complete running vehicles with in-demand drivelines can fetch well beyond that - quotes for those run from around $500 into the thousands depending on make, model, and parts demand. Here are our real numbers, not marketing ranges.
We've bought thousands of cars at our Bellevue yard over 20+ years, and the most common question on the phone is exactly this one: how much will you actually pay for my car? Most pages online dodge it with vague promises. This post does the opposite: it shows what we actually paid, car by car, so you can sanity-check any quote you receive - including ours. Why the Same-Type Car Can Pay $400 or $1,200
The spread in our own log comes down to four factors - understand them and you'll know which end of the range your car sits at before you even call.
1. Completeness beats everything
A non-runner with its engine, gearbox, wheels, and catalytic converter intact pays near the top of the range. Strip those items and the price drops fast - a cat converter alone carries serious value for its precious metals, and alloy wheels add $50-$200. The VY Commodore that paid $1,200 was complete; the Excel at $200 was a tired, stripped-down shell.
2. Weight sets the floor
Scrap steel in WA has recently traded around $250-$350 per tonne, so a 1.4-tonne sedan has a base metal value of roughly $350-$490 before any parts value. Heavier vehicles start higher - we break the maths down further in our guide to selling a car for scrap in Perth.
3. Parts demand sets the ceiling
Wreckers earn their margin reselling components, so they pay more for cars whose parts other Perth drivers are actively hunting. In our experience the demand tiers look like this:
- Highest demand: utes and 4WDs - Hilux, Ranger, LandCruiser, Navara, Patrol. Driveline and suspension parts sell within days. Even non-running 4WDs in our recent log paid $400-$1,200, and complete running examples command far more.
- Strong steady demand: high-volume family cars - Commodore, Camry, Corolla. Since Holden stopped production, Commodore owners rely entirely on wreckers; our recent VE and VY models paid $800-$1,200.
- Growing demand: newer Korean and Japanese fleet cars - i30, Cerato, Sonata, Yaris. As these age into the used-parts market, values keep climbing.
- Specialist value: European cars (VW, BMW, Mercedes) carry high per-part value but slower turnover - worth getting a specialist quote.
4. Condition category
In our log: scrap-condition cars paid $200-$1,200, non-runners $400-$1,200, and accident-damaged vehicles sat in between. A genuinely running car is a different conversation - if it drives, stops, and has papers, tell us when you call, because driveline-intact runners are worth significantly more than any figure on this page.
How to Push Your Quote to the Top of the Range
- Have your paperwork ready - photo ID plus proof of ownership; required in WA and speeds everything up
- Don't strip it first - removing the cat converter, battery, or wheels to sell separately usually nets less overall
- Know your make, model, year, and km - accurate details mean an accurate first quote with no re-negotiation on pickup day
- Get the quote confirmed in writing or by message - a reputable wrecker honours it at the gate
- Beware of too-good offers - quotes wildly above market often shrink on arrival; compare two yards but judge them on process, not just price
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do wreckers pay for a car that doesn't run?
At our yard, non-runners paid $400-$1,200 over the last three months, with a median around $600. Perth-wide, expect roughly $200-$1,000 for a complete non-runner depending on make, weight, and parts demand. Offers below $200 for a whole car are a red flag.
Do wreckers pay more than scrap metal dealers?
Yes, usually by a wide margin. A scrap dealer pays only weight value - maybe $300-$500 for a sedan. A wrecker pays weight value plus the resale value of usable parts, which is why the same car can fetch double from a wrecker.
Is the quote I get on the phone the price I'm paid?
With us, yes - as long as the vehicle matches what you described, the quote stands at pickup. Beware of operators who lowball or add surprise towing deductions on arrival.
What paperwork do I need to sell my car to a wrecker in WA?
You'll need photo ID and proof of ownership (licence plus registration papers, or a completed disposal form). We handle the notification process - see our full WA deregistration guide for details.
Which cars do wreckers pay the most for?
Utes and 4WDs with intact drivelines top the list, followed by high-volume sedans like the Commodore and Camry - our recent VY Commodore paid $1,200 as scrap. See our cash for Toyota page for brand-specific pricing.
